DIY Ornaments Using... Scrabble Tiles

I haven't posted in such a long time.... but I've just
been a little busy bee so I've got lots of good stuff
coming up to post! So keep checking back in =)

For today, I'm sharing Scrabble tile ornaments that
I made for zero dollars - I had everything just laying around
the house.... We've had a Scrabble for years and never play
it, so I figured I might as well use the tiles for ornaments.

Below are all the words I made with my one set of Scrabble
tiles.  If you happen to use your Scrabble game to actually play,
or if you don't have the game already, you can buy scrabble tiles
online, or check your local Goodwill store!

I had to decide if I wanted the word to hang horizontal or
vertical first. Then I broke a wooden stick to be just slightly
shorter than the length of the word. I'm sure there's a better way
to do this that would make a clean cut, but I was lazy and didn't
want to walk out to the garage and get something, so I just used
my muscles! I hot glued twine to the middle of the stick (if vertical,
the top of the stick) and then hot glued the letters on.

And that's it! I made 13 ornaments without spending a dime and
helped make my Christmas tree look a little more crafty!

Marshall Cornhole Boards

As a surprise to my husband I had our plain white
cornhole boards painted with a Marshall theme by a
friend of ours! She's ridiculously talented (click HERE
to see the pallet wall hanging she made for us!) and did
a great job on them! Isaiah absolutely loved them.

My mom ordered Marshall bean bags to go with the
set for Isaiah's birthday. Thought it was appropriate to
post now, with tailgating season in full swing!

GO HERD!! =)

Recovered Mom's Chairs

Over the weekend, my sister and I recovered my mom's
dining room chairs.  The right side is the OLD cushion, and
the left side is the NEW one.

Mom uses her dining room a LOT so the cushions were in
pretty bad shape.  We had dad remove the cushions from the chairs.

This is the BEFORE picture:

We decided to get upholstery fabric to recover the chairs in.
Mom wanted the fabric to still be neutral, but a little bit darker.  We had
a total of 6 chairs to recover, so we got 2 yards of fabric from Hobby
Lobby. We laid the cushions on the fabric and cut around each cushion.
Then mom ironed each piece of fabric.

When we looked at the chair cushions, there was an edging on
the cushion. We decided we needed to glue this down so
that the new fabric would be smooth around the edge.  We were afraid
that after recovering the cushions with the new fabric that it wouldn't
lay right on the chair if it wasn't glued down.

While we were doing this, we got a little busy
chit-chatting, and hot glued my shirt to the cushion!

We placed the cushion on the fabric, and stapled the back, then
the front. Then all four corners. Then the sides. The hardest part
was making sure the edges were smooth. Since there wasn't much
of a pattern, every crease was noticeable. So we wanted to make sure
to get the fabric as smooth as possible.  It really worked well to have
two people working on this - Rebekah pulled the fabric and held it
in place while I stapled.  Also, keep in mind where the cushion will be
attached to the chair so you don't put a staple right where a screw needs to go.

Dad screwed the cushions back onto the chairs, and
here's the end result. I think they turned out really nice!!!

DIY Tile Coasters

My sister has made hundreds (not an exaggeration!) of these over the
last year for bridal shower favors, Christmas gifts, some for both of
us to have... and we were even able to sell a bunch of them!

You won't believe how easy it is to make these....
Buy tiles at a home improvement store - just plain
white ones (they should cost about .19 cents a piece).

There are all different kinds of things that can be put on the
tile - scrapbook paper, photographs, wrapping paper, etc. I like it
best when the paper is a little smaller than the tile so that there is an
outline of the white tile around the paper. Using a foam brush, put
mod podge on the tile. Lay the paper on the tile, and smooth it out
so there aren't any air bubbles. Brush more mod podge over the paper
and let it dry. Hot glue felt on the bottom of the tile so it doesn't scratch
the furniture. If it's a gift set, wrap the coasters together with some ribbon.

It's that simple!

My sister's friend helping to cut TONS of scrapbook paper. Thanks Kathryn!

First Dance as Mr. & Mrs.

I've been a married woman for over three years now...
our anniversary was January 23rd. I knew my husband
wouldn't expect a present, but I decided to make something
that I personally wanted us to have... as it turned out,  he
thought it was a pretty cool gift too!

I saw the idea on Pinterest to frame a picture from your
first dance at your wedding, with the song lyrics around the picture.
I thought it was a cute idea, and figured it couldn't be too difficult
to make. It ended up being even easier because my mom helped me with
it, and she is much better with computers than I am.
The photo is a 4x6 and the frame is for an 8x10. We just printed the
lyrics onto thick computer paper, and I used double stick tape to attach the
picture to the paper. So simple! I think it turned out pretty cute!

Now I have to figure out a good place to display it. Not really
appropriate for the kitchen table, which is where it currently is!

Wood Photo Blocks

Thank you to my cousin Janna for introducing
me to an amazing craft.... Wooden Photo Blocks!

I made 15 of these blocks for Christmas gifts. This was
a craft that *gasp* my husband wanted me to make, and he
actually helped me make them! They were gifts
for his family members, and they will all end up being
displayed in the cabin that we are in the process of building.

This is a fairly simple project, it was just a little time consuming
for me, considering I made 15 of them all at once.

Materials:
wood blocks cut to size
photos printed on computer paper
gel medium
foam paintbrush
spatula or something similar
mod podge
rag and bowl of warm water

Directions:
First, you need to get some blocks of wood.
You can buy wood at Home Depot or Lowe's, and they should cut
you the sizes that you need. I got mine from my brother, who
builds houses, and my husband cut them for me. Have the
wood cut a little bit bigger than your picture-if your picture
is 4x6, cut the wood to be 4 1/2 x 6 1/2 or close to that.

Print pictures from the computer onto regular computer
paper. Flip the image horizontally so it is backwards before
printing. I only did black and white photos because I like
how that looks, but the process is supposed to work with color
photos as well.

Using a foam brush, spread on the gel medium (can be bought at
craft stores, I got mine at AC Moore) to cover the wood.
Also spread gel medium on the photo. Place the photo, picture
side down, on the wood. Use a spatula or similar item to gently rub
the photo so it lays flat on the wood and be sure to work out any
air bubbles. I spread out newspaper to work on and ended up getting
quite a bit of the gel medium on the newspaper - it's also pretty
sticky, so I had to replace my newspaper a couple times too.

Let the photo dry. I waited overnight. Then, use a rag and warm water to
gently rub off the paper (this can get messy - the paper residue will be
all over the place!)  Don't use too much pressure or else you will rub
parts of the picture off the wood. I let each picture dry in front of a fan
for a few minutes to see where there was still paper residue. It took about
three times to get all the paper off. Once all the paper is off, and the wood is
dry, and then add a coat of mod podge over the picture and let that dry.

If your wood block base is thick enough like mine, you can just stand
the pictures up to display. You could also add hooks on the back of
the wood to hang it on a wall, or attach ribbon/twine to hang it.
Another option would be to cut cubes out of the wood, and put pictures
on all sides of the cube.

I loved how this project turned out, and so did all of my in-laws!
Our cabin is on Summersville Lake, so I used a lot of pictures to represent
what the family enjoys doing while we are there - swimming, wake boarding,
surfing, rock climbing, camping, etc. They are gonna look great!

Pallet Wall Hanging

This was probably the gift that I was most excited about
giving this Christmas.... a custom wall hanging! I ordered it
from a friend of mine, Tabby-she is so incredibly talented!

This was for my husband for Christmas to put in the cabin
that he (and his family) started building this year - so it
was kind of a gift for the whole Haynie side of the family.
My brother-in-law named the cabin "The Accord."
I was so excited about having Isaiah open this, because
it was pretty much the only thing that was a surprise for him!

I asked for some hardware at the bottom of the pallet
so we could hang keys on it so it would be functional too.

Tabby has an etsy shop if you would like to see
what all she has done - she pretty much does
everything as a custom order so you get exactly
what you want!

Holiday Printables Gift Set

One of my favorite gifts that I gave this year was a
printable set.... a LOT of my friends got them, but I tried to make
them suit each person, so not everyone got the exact same thing.

Most of the printables were for the major holidays  -
Christmas, New Year's, Valentine's Day, St. Patrick's
Day, Easter, Fourth of July, Halloween, & Thanksgiving.
I also did one for summertime, and threw in a couple
random prints to use in between holidays.

My sister and I helped each other since we both gave these
as gifts - we had to trace and cut around each one to make
it fit in an 8x10 frame. I chose the Christmas printable to
put in each frame, and put all the other printables in sheet
protectors with a bow tied at the top to keep them together.

All the templates I used are shown below, with a link to get to them.
